Volunteers have been the backbone of our Movement since its birth in 1863. Today, as ever they are central to all activities of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, contributing to the success of our National Societies and assisting millions of vulnerable people in times of greatest need.
The Movement currently has some 97 million members and volunteers throughout the world, including some 20 million active volunteers.

Interested in volunteering overseas?
The International Federation does not recruit volunteers to work overseas. Nor do we coordinate exchange programmes between National Societies. For vacant staff positions in the International Federation, visit http://jobnet.ifrc.org.
Volunteering development in the International Federation
Volunteers need support and good management to be able to make a difference in their country. The International Federation’s volunteering development programme provide Red Cross Red Crescent societies with tools and resources to provide a favourable internal and external environment that encourages and facilitates the work of volunteers, as well as promotes volunteerism across all sectors of civil society.
